The seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the tightening of the rhetoric of American leader Donald Trump about the possible establishment of control over Greenland have caused fears in Canada that the country could become the next target of pressure from the United States. This was reported on January 10 by Bloomberg, citing analysts.

"[The US steps in Venezuela and around Greenland] were the final wake—up call for Canada," said Wesley Work, a former government security adviser.

Experts point out that the statements of the American administration that the Western Hemisphere is the sphere of exclusive interests of the United States give new meaning to Trump's previous statements about Canada.

"I believe — now more than ever — that the United States is ready to paralyze the Canadian economy in ways that suit the whims of President [Trump]," said Stephanie Carvin, a former national security analyst at the Canadian government.

On February 2, 2025, Trump declared that if Canada wanted to achieve tax cuts and avoid paying customs duties, it should join the United States as the 51st state. The American leader added that without huge American subsidies, Canada would simply lose its viability.

Later, on May 6, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said during a meeting with Trump that his country was not for sale. The US president, in turn, noted that he was not going to discuss this topic with the Prime Minister now, but stressed that such a development would "give a lot of advantages" to Ottawa. The American leader stressed that he respects Canadians, and the United States will be friends with this country.
