On January 10, Pope Leo XIV expressed concern about the lack of respect for the right to freedom of expression in the West.

"It is painful to see how, especially in the West, the space for genuine freedom of speech is rapidly shrinking," the Pope said.

Leo XIV expressed the opinion that a "new Orwellian-style language" is currently actively developing, which excludes those who do not conform to the "right" ideologies. In addition, the pontiff called on countries that are in conflict with each other to seek peaceful ways to resolve existing differences.

"In the light of recent events, this applies in particular to Venezuela. In this regard, I reiterate my call to respect the will of the Venezuelan people and to protect the human and civil rights of all, ensuring stability and harmony in the future," the Pope stressed.

On January 4, Pope Leo XIV called on Venezuela to remain an independent state and stated that he was actively following the events in the republic. He also called for respect for human rights and the rule of law, "as enshrined" in the Venezuelan constitution.
