The comic book with the first appearance of Superman sold for a record $ 15 million.
A rare copy of the first issue of Action Comics, in which Superman debuted in 1938, was sold to a private collector for a record $ 15 million (about 1.1 billion rubles). This was announced on January 9 on the website of the auction house ComicConnect, which acted as the broker of the transaction.
"In addition to the fact that this is a copy of the highest rating of 9.0 out of 10, this copy has a distinctive feature — it once belonged to actor Nicolas Cage, was stolen from him and returned 11 years later," said Vincent Zurzolo, president of Metropolis/ComicConnect.
According to the auction house, the rare edition, priced at 10 cents, was sold to an anonymous buyer in a private transaction. The previous cost record for a comic book was $9.1 million.
This specimen has a unique history: it was bought by Nicolas Cage in 1996 for $150,000 dollars, stolen from his home in 2000 and discovered in 2011 in a vault in California. After returning, the actor sold the comic for $ 2.2 million.
Stephen Fischler, CEO of ComicConnect, noted that the theft eventually brought significant profits to the owner due to the increased collector's value. He also drew a parallel with the story of the Mona Lisa, which, after being abducted in 1911, turned from an ordinary painting into a global icon painting. The deal confirmed Action Comics' No. 1 status as the most collectible and expensive comic book in the world.
At a traditional auction in Tokyo on January 5, bluefin tuna from Aomori Prefecture was sold for a record price of about 510.3 million yen (about 255 million rubles). The fish weighed 243 kg. This is the highest price for tuna since statistics began in 1999, significantly exceeding the previous record of 333.6 million yen (167 million rubles) set in 2019.
