At the end of December, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, appealed to the US administration not to take hasty actions against Venezuela in order to avoid destabilization and bloodshed. This was reported on January 10 by The Washington Post.

According to the newspaper, the cardinal tried to find out from the American ambassador to the Vatican, Brian Birch, Washington's plans for Venezuela and tried to ensure that the United States showed patience in the issue of a change of power.

WP newspaper also points out that the cardinal offered the Trump administration to discuss with Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro the possibility of voluntarily leaving the country. The press Service of the Holy See stated that the revealed fragments of the conversations inaccurately reflect their content.

Earlier, on January 9, it was reported that the United States had not offered Turkey to accept Maduro on its territory. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan clarified that Washington had warned about a possible military operation and discussed with the Venezuelan leader the possibility of leaving the country, but Turkey did not participate in such plans.
