The US State Department team has arrived in Venezuela for the first time since the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro in order to reopen the embassy in Caracas. This was reported on January 9 by CNN, citing a source.

"This visit comes as the United States prepares to reopen its embassy in Caracas and underscores the administration's desire to restore a diplomatic presence in a country that, according to President Donald Trump, the United States is going to 'manage,'" the article says.

According to the source, American diplomats and security personnel from the Venezuelan affairs unit based in Colombia, as well as Acting U.S. Ambassador to Colombia John McNamara, arrived in the Venezuelan capital "to conduct a preliminary assessment of the possibility of a phased resumption of work."

A plane belonging to the U.S. Department of State landed at Caracas International Airport on the same day.
