The United States will allocate $45 million to facilitate the implementation of the Cambodian-Thai agreements

The United States will provide Cambodia and Thailand with $45 million in aid to strengthen US President Donald Trump's peacekeeping efforts. This was announced on January 9 by US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs Michael DeSombre.

"The United States will continue to support the Governments of Cambodia and Thailand in their efforts to implement the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreements and create conditions for a return to peace, prosperity and stability for their peoples and the region," Reuters quoted DeSombre as saying.

According to him, the United States will allocate $15 million for border stabilization to help communities recover from the effects of the conflict, and $10 million for mine clearance and disposal of unexploded ordnance.

Washington will also allocate $20 million to initiatives that will help Cambodia and Thailand fight fraud and drug trafficking, as well as other programs.

Pass for peace: the Thailand-Cambodia agreement keeps the risk of a new escalation

The agreements still have not eliminated the main cause of the conflict, the territorial issue.

On December 8, 2025, the Cambodian military opened fire on the Thai Anupong base. In response, the Thai army called on residents of the border areas to evacuate to shelters due to the threat of escalation of the conflict. Soon after, fighting between Thailand and Cambodia unfolded along the entire joint border.

On December 26, the Russian Embassy in Cambodia informed Izvestia that, against the background of bilateral negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, official Phnom Penh continues to declare its commitment to a peaceful settlement of the contradictions based on the ceasefire agreement of July 28 and the Kuala Lumpur Declaration of October 26.

Thai PBS TV channel reported on December 27 that Thailand and Cambodia have signed a ceasefire agreement. It is noted that the negotiations were tense, as each side tried to work out an agreement acceptable to itself.
