In winter, many Russians take vitamins, but most supplements are not needed with a normal diet and no deficiency. About this on January 8, "Gazeta.Ru" said Anastasia Lebedeva, a nutritionist and associate professor at the ROSBIOTECH University Department.

According to her, only certain nutrients with a proven deficiency are really useful.

"First of all, it's vitamin D: in winter, its synthesis in the skin practically stops due to the short daylight hours and tight clothing. Vitamin D deficiency is widespread, affecting the immune system, bone health, muscle strength and general well-being. <...> Vitamin C is also often lacking, as there are fewer fresh seasonal fruits in winter. It does not prevent colds, but it really helps the immune system to work properly and promotes rapid tissue repair," Lebedeva explained.

She stressed that the popular "miracle complexes" with lots of vitamins are mostly marketing.

"Multivitamins do not provide additional protection against colds, do not increase energy and do not improve performance if there is no shortage. Moreover, excessive intake of vitamins A, E, K, and B6 can lead to hypervitaminosis and side effects," the expert added.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the children's body in winter is especially in need of vitamins and nutrients to maintain immunity and energy. Endocrinologist Oksana Mikhaleva recommended including citrus fruits, carrots, nuts, fish and persimmons in children's diets to maintain activity and health during the cold season.
