Szijjarto announced Hungary's intention to vote against the EU-MERCOSUR agreement
Budapest intends to vote against the free trade agreement between the member states of the European Union (EU) and MERCOSUR (MERCOSUR, the South American Common Market). This was announced on Thursday, January 8, by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.
"Tomorrow Hungary will vote against the free trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur. <...> We oppose this decision, as Brussels once again ignores the interests of our farmers," he wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
The Hungarian Foreign Minister explained that if an agreement is signed between the actors, Europe will receive unlimited imports of agricultural products, which will affect the well-being of Hungarian farmers.
On December 10, 2025, Andy Bounds, a columnist for the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, pointed out the risk of the EU disrupting the conclusion of a "vital" trade agreement with MERCOSUR countries. He noted that the parties had been negotiating for 25 years, and also announced the signing of the document on December 20, 2025.
On December 20, 2025, Bloomberg announced that the EU countries had nevertheless failed in their attempt to sign a trade agreement with MERCOSUR, having failed in their attempt to circumvent the world order established by US President Donald Trump. It was specified that the next time the leaders of the European states will try to meet for signing on January 12, 2026.
