The Interior Ministry has warned Russians about a new fraud scheme that forces them to install malicious software under the guise of protecting finances. This was announced on January 8 in the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The press center clarified that the attackers contact the victims, introduce themselves as law enforcement officers and report the threat of remote theft of money. Scammers send files for download, for example, Kaspersky.apk or Security.apk, after which they get access to data about the device model, SMS messages, geolocation and can remotely control the gadget.

According to TASS, the criminals also demand to transfer funds to a "secure account", while intercepting information about banking applications, contacts and payments.

Earlier, on January 7, it was reported that cybercriminals often extort money using fake online shopping sites, SBP payment pages and fake real estate rental ads. The Interior Ministry recommended checking the website address, not transmitting card data, and using separate cards for online payments to reduce risks.
