The Marinera tanker seized by the United States was chartered under the flag of Guyana.

The Marinera oil tanker seized by the United States was chartered by a private trader flying the flag of Guyana. The ship changed its flag to a Russian one in the Atlantic after the start of the persecution by the United States Coast Guard ship, Izvestia found out on December 8.

The American ship demanded that the crew head to the US port, as the United States had not received confirmation from the Guyanese authorities that the country had indeed provided its flag to the tanker. However, the ship did not comply with the requirements and headed for the Atlantic Ocean. Already on the way, it changed its name and received a temporary registration under the Russian flag from the captain of the port of Sochi.

There are 28 people on board the tanker, 20 of whom are Ukrainians. Six members of the crew are Georgian citizens, including the ship's captain. The two remaining sailors are Russians.

The Russian Ministry of Transport reported a day earlier that the tanker Marinera received a temporary permit to sail under the state flag of the Russian Federation on December 24, 2025.

On the same day, the Russian Foreign Ministry told Izvestia that Russia demands humane and decent treatment from the United States for the Russian sailors aboard the seized Marinera tanker. The foreign ministry also stated that they are closely monitoring reports of the landing of the American military on the ship.
