The President of the United States from 2001 to 2009, George W. Bush, told Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2001 that both countries needed to get rid of the remnants of the Cold War and transform relations. The relevant declassified documents were published on October 7 by the National Security Archive, a public research organization.

"We need to get rid of all the remnants of the Cold War," the American leader told Putin.
