- The German Cabinet announced the inability of the United States to prove the legality of the operation in Venezuela.
The German government believes that the United States failed at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Venezuela on January 5 to convincingly confirm the compliance of its actions with international law. This was stated to journalists on January 7 by the official representative of the German Cabinet, Stefan Cornelius.
"In any case, the United States there [at the UN Security Council] could not convincingly prove that their actions were in accordance with international law," he stressed.
Cornelius noted that the legal assessment of the US operation from the point of view of the German government is difficult and requires time to clarify the situation. The representative of the German Cabinet refrained from further assessing the actions of the United States.
Earlier, on January 7, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sputnik Radio that during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Venezuela and the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro, the word "shock" was often heard in the audience. She pointed out that this word was used by many participants at the UN Security Council table, including Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, and the Chinese delegation.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on January 6 that Russia welcomes the efforts of the Venezuelan authorities to protect state sovereignty and national interests. The statement notes that the oath of office of the Executive Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, demonstrates the government's determination to ensure the unity of power and create conditions for stable development.
On January 5, Rodriguez took the oath of office as interim president of the country. On January 4, the Supreme Court of Venezuela recognized her as acting president.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was brought to New York Federal Court on January 5 to face charges. In court, he declared his innocence and said that he was still the president of his country. The American court agreed to schedule a visit by consular officers to Venezuela. The judge ordered Maduro to appear in court on March 17 for a hearing. On January 3, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on the US leadership to release Maduro.
