Improper storage of medicines at home can make them useless or even dangerous. Olga Tkacheva, Director of the Russian Gerontological Research and Clinical Center at Pirogov University, MD, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told about this on January 7. "Special attention should be paid to the proper storage of medicines. In old age, due to forgetfulness, drugs are often left on the table, in the bathroom or in the kitchen, where high temperature, humidity and steam gradually change the properties of medicines," Tkacheva said.

The doctor noted that any medications can become harmful if they are not stored according to the instructions: heat, high humidity or direct sunlight destroy the active ingredients. She also stressed the need to dispose of expired medications or those that have changed color, odor, or consistency, which many older people do not do.

Tkacheva stressed that it is important to regularly check the home medicine cabinet and get rid of expired and suspicious medicines. She advised to allocate a separate cabinet or a first-aid kit box for medicines.

"Do not keep medicines in the bathroom, in the kitchen or on the windowsill. The optimal storage location is dry, cool, and protected from direct light. If the package says "store in the cold", place the drug in the refrigerator, but do not freeze them. Tablets should be kept in their native blisters and vials until fully used. Do not put different pills in one bottle, as you risk confusing them. Check the expiration dates regularly and monitor the condition of the drugs," concluded Tkacheva.
