The European Union (EU) intends to step up efforts for the reunification of Cyprus in 2026. This was announced on January 7 by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen.

"For the EU, a comprehensive, fair and sustainable settlement of Cyprus remains an absolute priority. That is why I appointed former European Commissioner Johannes Hahn as the EU's special representative for Cyprus. And that is why we will do everything in our power to ensure that the process under the auspices of the United Nations is brought to a result, so that in 2026 the dynamics in favor of reunified Cyprus can be resumed," the publication says.
