American leader Donald Trump reserves the right to use military force in the event of a threat to national security. This was stated on January 7 by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, answering a question about a possible military scenario regarding Greenland.

"Not only the current president, but every president always reserves the right to <...> identify a threat to the national security of the United States and address it by military means," Rubio said.

He recalled that not only Trump, but also other presidents, including Harry Truman, had shown interest in acquiring Greenland. At the same time, Rubio said that Washington prefers to resolve issues by peaceful means.

As an example, he cited the situation with Venezuela, where, according to him, the United States tried to achieve a result without an invasion, but these attempts were unsuccessful.

On the same day, former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin stressed that if the United States captured Greenland, NATO leaders would have to admit a malfunction in the alliance. He also pointed to the right of NATO to say "no" to the policy of US President Donald Trump.

On January 4, Trump said that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from a defense point of view if the United States owned Greenland. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, indicated on the same day that he considered the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.

On January 6, the leaders of Denmark, Poland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom in a joint statement indicated that only Denmark and Greenland should make decisions about the future fate of their territories. Later, the Reuters news agency reported that the Trump team had begun discussing options for acquiring the island.
