- In the Netherlands, a malfunction was reported at Amsterdam airport Schiphol due to the weather.
Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport has been experiencing large-scale disruptions for several days due to environmental restrictions on anti-icing aircraft handling and the lack of a well-developed crisis plan in case of winter weather. This was reported on January 7 by the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
"Environmental regulations get in the way. If we could treat planes from ice at the gates, it would significantly ease the situation, but this is prohibited," Ruud Stegers, president of the Dutch Pilots' Association (VNV), told the newspaper.
Due to queues for deaising, planes cannot take off on time and cruise around the airport for a long time. Since 2012, anti-icing treatment in Schiphol has been allowed only at a special site near the Zvanenburg runway, where glycol is collected to prevent environmental damage. Similar operations at the airports of Frankfurt and Zurich are carried out next to the runway, which allows ships to leave immediately.
In recent days, Schiphol has become one of the world leaders in the number of flight delays and cancellations.
The New York Times newspaper reported on the same day that a large-scale transport collapse had occurred in Europe due to adverse weather conditions. The air hubs in Northern Europe were the hardest hit. At least five people have died in France as a result of the weather conditions, and about a third of the country's territory has been placed on high weather alert. New snowfalls are expected in the Netherlands and Belgium.
At the end of December, it was reported that more than 1.6 thousand flights were canceled throughout the United States due to snowfall, with JetBlue accounting for the largest number of cancellations. The largest airports in New York were significantly affected, where up to 23 cm of snow was forecast.
