The US Navy has boarded the Marinera oil tanker, formerly known as Bella-1. This was announced on January 7 by the Ministry of Transport of Russia.

"Today, at about 3 p.m. Moscow time, the US Navy boarded the ship on the high seas outside the territorial waters of any states, and communication with the ship was lost," the Ministry of Transport said in a Telegram channel.

The ministry clarified that on December 24, 2025, the vessel received a temporary permit to sail under the state flag of the Russian Federation. The Ministry of Transport stressed that the regime of freedom of navigation operates on the high seas, and no state has the right to use force against ships registered in another jurisdiction.

On the same day, the Reuters news agency reported that the United States had launched an operation to seize the Marinera oil tanker. It was clarified that the operation was being carried out by the Coast Guard and the US armed forces.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on January 6 that the Russian Federation is monitoring the situation with the Marinera oil tanker, which is being pursued by the US and NATO militaries in the international waters of the North Atlantic. The diplomats stressed that the tanker was flying the Russian Federation's national flag in full compliance with international maritime law.

On December 23, Reuters reported on a possible attempt by the US Coast Guard to intercept the Marinera oil tanker after reinforcements arrive. It was noted that the tanker's crew had so far refused to allow Coast Guard personnel on board.
