A plot to assassinate the country's president has been uncovered in Burkina Faso.
A plot has been uncovered in Burkina Faso to assassinate senior officials, including President Ibrahim Traore. This was announced on January 7 by the Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana.
"The conspirators planned to cause chaos in the country through a series of targeted killings of civilian and military officials, starting with the neutralization of the head of state Traore," Burkina-24 TV channel quoted the minister as saying.
According to the minister, the operation was supposed to begin on January 3, 2026 at 23:00 (January 4, 02:00 Moscow time). The conspirators intended to kill the president at close range or attack his residence with drones, after which a ground intervention by external forces was expected.
Sana clarified that former President Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was behind the plot, and the funding came from Côte d'Ivoire. Some of the participants have already been detained, and arrests are continuing.
Four civilians were killed on August 24, one was injured and one was missing as a result of an attack by armed men in northern Côte d'Ivoire near the border with Burkina Faso. It was clarified that after issuing the alert, Ivorian forces from the Northern Operational Zone immediately deployed air and ground assets to ensure security in the area and provide assistance to the population.
