Winter walks can reduce the incidence of acute respiratory viral infections by 30-50% due to the strengthening of immunity. She told the Newspaper about this on January 6.Ru" internist, occupational therapist of JSC "Medicine" (academician Roitberg clinic) Svetlana Burnatskaya.

"Staying outdoors at low temperatures increases the number and activity of natural killer cells (NK cells), increases vitamin D levels, activates thermogenesis, which requires energy and enhances metabolic processes, and reduces cortisol levels, reducing stress," the doctor explained.

According to her, also thanks to daytime walks in winter, circadian rhythms are restored.

The therapist recommended spending 30 to 60 minutes outdoors.

The specialist noted that when organizing walks, it is important to maintain a temperature balance: not to overcool, but also not to overheat.

"Hardening is achieved by gradual adaptation, not hypothermia. If you are not used to the cold, start with 10-15 minutes at -5 °C and gradually increase the time. Before going outside, it is important to wait 30-40 minutes after eating, clear your nose of mucus, put on a hat and scarf, breathe through your nose, adjust your clothes when sweating, and drink water," the expert added.

Earlier, on January 3, the journal Medical Xpress reported that during the Christmas and New Year holidays, the risk of heart attacks increases markedly due to overeating, alcohol consumption, emotional stress and cold weather.
