Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on January 6 that the US claims to Greenland undermine the foundations of NATO, making the organization's existence meaningless.

"No member of NATO should attack or threaten another member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Otherwise, NATO will lose its meaning if conflicts or disputes arise within it," Tusk said. Gazeta.pl .

The Polish prime minister added that Denmark "can count on the solidarity of the whole of Europe." He also stressed that Washington should understand that any attempt to undermine the foundations of NATO will not be understood in any European country.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the US administration is working on a draft agreement with Greenland on free association, which can improve the standard of living of the island's population. Under such agreements, the United States provides financial support, while the island retains internal self-government and transfers defense issues to Washington.

Attempts at direct negotiations with the authorities of Greenland were rejected, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared the inadmissibility of any attempts to annex the island. Prior to that, she strongly recommended that US President Donald Trump refrain from making statements about the annexation of Greenland to the United States.
