The Federation Council pointed to the possibility of Trump finding another form of control over Greenland.

US President Donald Trump, who views Greenland as an important element of the threat to the country's national security, could well find a different form of American control in the western hemisphere than seizing the island. This was announced on January 5 by Alexey Pushkov, Chairman of the Information Policy Commission of the Federation Council.

"Greenland is located in the western hemisphere, where, according to the Trump doctrine, full "American supremacy", that is, hegemony, should be established," the senator wrote on the Telegram channel.

Pushkov noted that the American politician focuses on the "necessity" of Greenland for the United States. However, Trump will not be able to do what he did with Venezuela in this case.

"Of course, Greenland is not Venezuela. For her, Trump may find another way to seize control of this strategically important and resource-rich territory. <...> Moreover, Greenland has been a colony of Denmark for a long time, and it has something to show the Danes," he added.

On the same day, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted that the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States towards the island is disrespectful and unacceptable. Greenland is open to dialogue and communication, but this must happen in accordance with the norms of international law, he said.

On January 4, Trump noted that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from the point of view of defense if the United States owned Greenland. He added that Denmark cannot provide national security for the United States, and therefore Greenland is a strategically important region. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called on the politician to stop talking about the inclusion of Greenland in the United States, stressing that Washington has no right to annex any of the three parts of the Danish Kingdom.
