Christmas services are held in Russian churches on the night of January 7. Traditionally, the main divine service is conducted by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Izvestia is broadcasting live.

The Divine service will begin at 23:00 Moscow time with Great Compline, followed by the Divine Liturgy. The service usually lasts about four hours. Before the ceremony, the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church will also wish the faithful a Merry Christmas.

The event will be shown live on the TV channels "Spas", "First" and "Russia 1". The broadcast will also be available on the Izvestia website.

The Christmas service was first broadcast live in 1990. The broadcast was conducted from the Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo. At the same time, the event had a permanent commentator, Nikolai Derzhavin, deputy head of the Patriarch's press service. In 1999, the main service was moved to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
