After the operation in Venezuela, US President Donald Trump claims on January 4 that Washington needs control over Greenland for defensive purposes.

"We absolutely need Greenland," he said. His words are quoted by The Atlantic magazine.

The American politician said that the territory was allegedly "surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships."

On January 4, Danish diplomat Jesper Moeller Sørensen stressed that the United States must respect the territorial integrity of Denmark, including Greenland. The reason for the diplomat's similar reaction was the publication of Katie Miller, the wife of Trump's deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, where she posted a map of Greenland painted in the color of the American flag, accompanying the post with the inscription: "Soon."

The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said on December 23 that the authorities of the state regret new statements by US representatives that they do not hide their desire to seize the island. He drew attention to the fact that Greenland's territorial integrity and right to self-determination are based on international law and cannot simply be ignored.

On December 21, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the US special envoy to Greenland. The next day, on December 22, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen summoned the American ambassador in Copenhagen for an explanation after Landry's appointment and his statements about his intention to annex the island to the United States. In 2025, the American leader was also told that the island was not for sale and would not be, but Denmark could cooperate more with the United States.
