Boat crash in Nigeria kills at least 25 people
At least 25 people have died in an overloaded canoe crash in Nigeria. This was reported on Sunday by the TRT Africa agency, citing officials from Yobe State.
"The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency can confirm a canoe accident that occurred along the Nguru Waterway," said Mohammed Goje, the agency's executive secretary.
A boat with 52 passengers capsized on its way from the city of Adiyani to Gharbi. 13 people were rescued, and 14 more remain missing. According to Goje, the victims were on their way to fishing, farming and other local jobs.
Search and rescue operations involving security services and volunteers are continuing.
On December 6, a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of the Greek island of Crete, drowning 18 people. Two people were rescued.
