Swiss authorities have opened a criminal case against two managers of a bar in Crans-Montana, where a massive fire broke out on New Year's Eve, killing at least 40 and injuring more than 100 people. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on January 4.

The managers of the institution are charged with manslaughter, negligent bodily injury and arson by negligence, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

A preliminary investigation revealed that sparklers were the likely cause of the fire.

The explosion and fire in the Constellation bar at the Crans-Montana ski resort occurred on January 1. According to the law enforcement agencies, the incident does not qualify as a terrorist act. Those who died in the event of a fire due to a firecracker thrown into the suspended ceiling were trapped in the basement hall where the event was taking place.

About 40 people were killed and 119 injured in the incident. There were no Russian citizens among the identified victims of the fire in the Constellatio bar.

Samuel Rapp, an eyewitness to the tragedy, said that a powerful explosion in a bar on New Year's Eve caused panic and stampede. Swiss President Guy Parmelin said the incident was one of the worst tragedies in the country's history.
