The first four victims of the Crans-Montana fire have been identified
The first four victims of the fire at the Le Constellation bar, which is located in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, have been identified — the youngest of them is 16 years old, and the oldest is 21 years old. This was announced on Saturday, January 3, on the website of the Canton of Valais police.
"Extensive identification work carried out over the past few hours by the Valais Cantonal Police, the DVI (Identification of Victims of disasters) and the Institute of Forensic Medicine has identified two Swiss women aged 21. — Ed.) and 16 years old and two Swiss men aged 18 [years] and 16 years," the article says.
The bodies of the identified victims, whose identities were not disclosed, were handed over to their families. The statement clarified that work is continuing to identify the remaining victims and stated that new information will be added as it becomes available.
The explosion and fire in Crans-Montana became known on Thursday, January 1. The BFMTV channel said on the same day that those who died in the tragedy were trapped in the basement hall, where there was a disco at the time of the fire. Law enforcement agencies did not classify the incident as a terrorist attack, and later the Italian Ambassador to Bern, Gianlorenzo Cornado, called the cause of the incident a firecracker that was thrown into the suspended ceiling.
On January 2, police officials identified 113 of the 119 victims of the fire. Russian citizens were not included in this list. According to Samuel Rapp, an eyewitness to the tragedy, the incident caused panic and chaos, which escalated into a stampede. Speaking to Izvestia, the young man said that the establishment where the fire occurred was popular among the younger generation.
