Honored coach of the USSR and the RSFSR in kayaking and canoeing Yuri Surkov died at the age of 85. This was reported on January 3 in the Telegram channel of the Russian Canoe Federation.
His farewell will take place on January 5 at the Dimitrievsky Cemetery in Volgograd.
"His integrity, deep understanding of sports and sincere love for work have brought up not only Olympic champions, but also strong, purposeful personalities," the message says.
Surkov coached the RSFSR national team, and since 1991, the Russian national team. He worked as a senior coach of the men's national rowing team at four Olympic Games: Barcelona (1992), Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Beijing (2008).
