The annual salary of the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, is more than 50% higher than the amount indicated in the official report of the agency. The corresponding investigation was published on January 2 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper with reference to the ECB's annual report.

"The president of the ECB and the highest—paid official of the European Union (EU) should represent the gold standard of accountability," said Fabio De Masi, a member of the European Parliament.

According to FT estimates, Lagarde's total income for 2024 was about €726,000, which is 56% more than the base salary of €466,000, which the ECB indicates in its annual report. The difference, according to the newspaper, is formed by additional payments for housing and other needs (about € 135 thousand), as well as remuneration for work on the board of directors of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), which is estimated at about € 125 thousand.

The ECB's press service said that the president's salary was set when the bank was created, and "the only salary change since then for all presidents has been the annual salary adjustment, which applies to all ECB employees." They also noted that the agency's policy of disclosing such information "corresponds to many other international government institutions."

On December 5, Forbes magazine published a ranking of the 100 most influential women in the world, headed by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen. According to the list provided, ECB President Lagarde takes the second place, and US Vice President Kamala Harris closes the top three.
