Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov of the French football club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) may recover longer than expected after an injury. This was reported on January 2 by the newspaper L'Equipe.

The publication recalled that Safonov broke his left arm in a match with the Flamengo club. Initially, it was assumed that the recovery would last 3-4 weeks, but now the time has increased to 5-6 weeks.

The publication also reported that Safonov has resumed running and punching training, but is wearing a protective bandage to support his left arm.

The meeting where PSG won in a penalty shootout over Brazilian Flamengo took place on December 17, 2025. Safonov became the first goalkeeper in the history of football to deflect four consecutive penalties in a series at an International Football Federation (FIFA) tournament. The PSG press service also reported on December 19 that Safonov suffered a broken arm during this match.
