- The prosecutor's office called a sparkler a possible cause of the fire in Crans-Montana.
The fire in a bar in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, which claimed the lives of dozens of people, could have been caused by careless handling of fountain candles or sparklers. This was announced on January 2 by the Prosecutor General of the canton of Valais, Beatrice Pioux.
"Everything indicates that the fire was caused by candles, fountains or sparklers that were inserted into champagne bottles and placed too close to the ceiling," she said during a press conference.
According to the Prosecutor General, preliminary conclusions were made based on the analysis of video recordings and witness statements.
The explosion and fire at the ski resort were reported on January 1. According to the law enforcement agencies, the incident does not qualify as a terrorist act. Those who died in the event of a fire due to a firecracker thrown into the suspended ceiling were trapped in the basement hall where the event was taking place. About 40 people were killed and 115 injured in the fire. The Russian Embassy in Switzerland also informed that it had not received any information about the injured Russians after the incident.
Samuel Rapp, an eyewitness to the tragedy, also said that a powerful explosion in a bar on New Year's Eve caused panic and stampede. Swiss President Guy Parmelin said the incident was one of the worst tragedies in the country's history.
