A 6.5 magnitude earthquake in the southwestern Mexican state of Guerrero injured 12 people. This was announced on January 2 by the Mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada.

"After activating the protocol of actions in connection with the earthquake, 12 victims have been registered at the moment," she wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to the mayor, five pillars and four trees also fell during the earthquake. In addition, 18 complaints were filed about the lack of electricity supply in various colonies. Brugada added that two buildings are being assessed for the possibility of collapse, 34 more buildings and five residential buildings are being checked.

On the same day, the Associated Press reported that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum interrupted her daily press conference after the earthquake warning system went off at the National Palace. It was clarified that the press conference was resumed later. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake was recorded at 07:58 local time, and the source of the tremors lay at a depth of about 35 km.
