Swiss President Guy Parmelin said on January 1 that the fire in the resort of Crans-Montana, which killed at least 40 people, was one of the worst tragedies in the country's history.

"This is a tragedy of unprecedented, horrifying proportions. The fire that occurred last night in a bar in Crans-Montana is one of the worst tragedies our country has ever known," he said during a press conference.

The Head of State said that he had held talks with the leaders of neighboring countries, including France and Italy. According to him, the Swiss authorities have set up crisis centers to coordinate actions with foreign partners.

Parmelin did not rule out that foreign citizens could be among the dead, since Crans-Montana is a popular international resort. He also noted that he was counting on the help of other countries in treating the victims. In particular, some of the patients were admitted to France after the fire.
