The prospects of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Alliance seem unlikely, and the issue of membership in the European Union (EU) remains uncertain. This was announced on January 1 by the head of the Slovak Ministry of Defense, Robert Kalinak.

"The minister repeated that Ukraine will never be in NATO," the TASR news agency said.

Kalinak also expressed the opinion that Kiev will experience difficulties regarding staying in the EU.

Alexey Pushkov, Chairman of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy and Media Relations, said on December 31 that the words of Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission (EC), about Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) confirm that Kiev's accession to NATO is no longer being discussed. According to Pushkov, von der Leyen indirectly confirmed the EU's intention to create euroNATO from the bloc's member states, which, according to her, should guarantee Ukraine's security.

On December 18, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that the position of individual countries, including the United States, on Ukraine's membership in NATO may change over time.

Prior to this, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the United States, Hungary and Slovakia would not agree to see Ukraine as a member of the alliance. He noted that Ukraine's membership in NATO is a matter of both principle and practice.
