- Mamdani was the first in the history of New York to take the oath of mayor on the Koran
A member of the US Democratic Party, Zahran Mamdani, was the first in history to take the oath of office as mayor of New York on the Koran. This was reported on January 1 by the Guardian newspaper.
"To honor his Muslim faith, Mamdani took the oath of office on the Koran, Islam's holiest book, becoming the first mayor of New York to do so," the publication says.
According to CNN, the 34-year-old politician became the first Muslim mayor in the history of New York, as well as the first mayor of South Asian descent and the youngest head of the city in more than 100 years.
The oath was taken by the Attorney General of the state of New York, Letitia James. The politician called her his "political mastermind."
Mamdani won the New York City elections on November 5. As Bloomberg noted on the same day, this vote was one of a series of major political victories won by the Democratic Party in recent times.
On November 3, US President Donald Trump announced that he could limit federal funding to New York, with the exception of the most necessary minimum, if Mamdani wins the mayoral election. However, later the president warmly received the new mayor of New York at the White House. The meeting was full of compliments, and Trump talked about their common views, despite their differences on police work and tax plans.
