The European Union (EU) is working on a new, 20th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, its introduction is planned to coincide with the anniversary of the special military operation. This was reported on December 31 by the newspaper Die Welt.

"The planned measures include travel restrictions and asset freezes in the EU for new individuals and businesses. <...> Further sanctions are also planned in the energy and banking sectors. Loopholes that allow circumventing existing sanctions will also be closed," the publication says.

Among other things, the introduction of a ban on the import of uranium from Russia as part of restrictions against Rosatom is being discussed.

Earlier, on December 26, it became known that the Benelux countries — Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg — lost more than half of their exports to Russia after the introduction of EU sanctions against the country. According to the calculations of the statistical service, from January to October 2025, revenues from trade with Russia amounted to €4.8 billion, which is 51.5% less than in the same period of 2021, when exports reached €9.9 billion.
