The court decided to transfer businessman Karapetyan to house arrest
A court in Armenia has decided to change the measure of restraint for businessman Samvel Karapetyan and transfer him to house arrest. This was announced on December 30 by the businessman's lawyer Aram Vardevanyan.
"After considering our petition, the court decided to partially satisfy it, again applying a strict measure of restraint against Samvel Karapetyan in the form of house arrest," he wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a recognized extremist organization in the Russian Federation).
In addition, the court decided to set bail for Karapetyan. The lawyer did not specify its size.
Sputnik Armenia clarifies that on December 24, the businessman's defense filed a complaint with the Court of Cassation against the decision of the Court of Appeal of December 11, which rejected the appeal against the arrest.
Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia, after which he was arrested.
On July 3, the Armenian parliament adopted in the final reading laws allowing the nationalization of the company "Electric Networks of Armenia", which belongs to the detained businessman Samvel Karapetyan. The opposition expressed its disagreement, which considers the process illegal. On July 15, the opposition political parties of the Armenian parliament appealed to the Constitutional Court (CC) demanding that the law on the nationalization of Karapetyan's Electric Grids be declared unconstitutional.
On July 23, Karapetyan defeated the Armenian government in the International Arbitration Court in the case of the nationalization of the "Electric Grids of Armenia", which belonged to him. Later, on November 6, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan linked the order of nationalization of the "Electric Grids of Armenia" with their cost. He also stated the need to maintain government involvement in key decisions.
Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) On November 17, Armenia signed a document revoking the license of the Electric Networks of Armenia Company (ENA), which is owned by Karapetyan. Four out of five members of the commission voted for the relevant decision. According to the CROW project, it will enter into force on November 21 of this year.
