Christmas Eve, or Vespers, refers to the days on the eve of the two main church holidays — Christmas and Epiphany (Epiphany). Unlike other holidays, the pre-celebration of these events lasts not one, but several days, therefore, a separate concept was introduced to designate their eve.

The Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas Eve on January 6. For Catholics and Protestants, Christmas Eve is also a significant day, but they celebrate it two weeks earlier — on December 24.

The tradition of celebrating Christmas Eve in Orthodoxy originated in the IV–VI centuries. This happened after Christmas and Epiphany were finally divided into two separate divine services. In the following centuries, special chants were created, which are heard in temples during the vigil to this day.

The name "Christmas Eve" comes from the main dish of the day, sochiva. This traditional lean dish is made from boiled grains, honey and dried fruits. According to church regulations, on the day of perpetual prayer, believers are instructed to abstain from food until the "first star" — that is, until the moment when, during the festive liturgy, a candle symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem, which showed the magi the way to the newborn Christ, is brought to the center of the temple.

The service on Christmas Eve is particularly solemn. On this day, the so-called "royal hours" are read. They got their name because they used to be attended by the sovereign. Old Testament prophecies about the coming of the Savior, recorded several centuries before His birth, and eight special Christmas parodies are also heard during the service.

The people of Russia approached the holiday with great responsibility. The women were preparing a festive dinner consisting of 12 dishes, according to the number of the apostles of Christ. It was customary to start the meal with a sochiv. Vegetable salads and stews, fish, lean borscht, mushroom dishes, cabbage rolls and dumplings without meat, as well as sweet pastries were also served on the table. It was believed that on a holiday you need to try every dish to strengthen your health and attract prosperity to your home.

Before the 1917 revolution, children and teenagers went caroling on Christmas Eve. They walked around the yards, sang Christmas carols and congratulated the owners on the holiday. For this, they were thanked with sweets or presented with coins. In some regions, carolers dressed up in costumes of animals and fairy-tale characters, wearing inside-out sheepskin coats and hats. Now this tradition is preserved mainly due to the efforts of folklore groups.

Despite the disapproval of the Church, there was often fortune-telling in the villages on Christmas Eve. Unmarried girls tried to find out their fate in this way and see the future groom. Family people often wondered about the harvest and other household chores.

In modern Russia, on January 6, believers invite their loved ones to a lenten festive dinner, and then they go together to the Christmas service in the temple. In some families, it is customary to give symbolic gifts to children, such as useful toys, Christian books, or crosses.

One of the easiest ways to wish your loved ones a Happy Christmas Eve is to send them a themed postcard.
