The International Council of Football Associations (IFAB) plans to consider changing the rules for determining offside at its meeting on January 20, 2026. This was reported on December 30 by the Spanish newspaper AS.

If the changes are adopted, the new rules may come into force from the 2026/27 season. A possible clarification of the procedure for determining offside will be discussed at the meeting in London, the newspaper said.

According to the current regulations, offside is fixed if any part of the attacking player's body that can score a goal is closer to the opponent's goal at the time of the transfer than the penultimate defending player, including the goalkeeper.

In September, Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports and head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), announced his intention to change the limit on foreign players in the Russian football championship from the 2028/29 season. According to him, it will be tightened according to the scheme of "10 foreign players in the application, five on the field."
