The defendants in the case of torture in the Saratov prison hospital were sentenced

The Moscow Regional Court sentenced the defendants in the case of torture in the Saratov prison hospital to terms from 12 years to life in prison. This was reported on December 30 by a correspondent of Izvestia from the courtroom.

Depending on the role of each individual, the defendants are charged with sexual assault, murder, abuse of office, and extortion.

Sergei Ananyev was sentenced to life imprisonment. Pavel Gatsenko, the former head of the Saratov FSIN hospital, was sentenced to 21 years in a high-security penal colony, and Alexander Krainov was sentenced to 12 years in a high-security penal colony. Sergei Linkevich received 18 years in a special regime penal colony, and he will spend the first seven years in prison.

Sergei Maltsev, the former head of the security department of the regional tuberculosis hospital, was sentenced to 16 years in a high-security penal colony, and Ildar Mukhametzyanov was sentenced to 17 years in a special—regime penal colony with the first seven years in prison.

Vitaly Yanin will be sent to a special regime colony for 22 years, but will spend the first eight years in prison. The case against Viktor Sheyanov was dismissed due to his death.

In November 2021, 18 employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service in the Saratov region were fired after reports of violence against prisoners in the regional prison hospital, and 11 more people were disciplined. The commission of the central office of the Federal Penitentiary Service has begun inspections.

At the same time, the court detained the former head of the security department of the regional Tuberculosis hospital No. 1 of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Saratov Region, Sergei Maltsev.

According to investigators, the former heads of the institution and the security department created a criminal group with the aim of intimidating convicts in the prison hospital and extorting money. They were treated by prisoners who committed illegal acts against other convicts.
