The adjustment of fares for public transport in Moscow is justified by objective economic factors. This opinion was expressed by Dmitry Zavyalov, Director of the Higher School of Economics and Business, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Logistics at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.

"The inability to index tariffs in a timely manner will negatively affect the development of urban transport and the quality of services provided to passengers," Zavyalov stressed. According to him, the capital's transport has been "developing at an unprecedented pace over the past 13-14 years." New metro stations are being built in the city, the MCC and the MCD are within walking distance, large-scale rolling stock upgrades are underway, new land transport routes are being launched, including between the capital and the region, and regular river transport is developing.

70% of the capital's residents choose urban transport for daily trips, Zavyalov stressed. This is 3.29 million more trips per day on all types of urban transport, including the IDC, than in 2010. "And if we compare with other Russian megacities, Moscow remains one of the most affordable fares, and the flexible ticket menu provides the opportunity to choose the most optimal ticket option that suits the travel style of a particular passenger," he said.

The cost of public transport in Moscow has changed since January 2, 2026. Prices have been adjusted to compensate for the rising cost of electricity, fuel and inflation, the city's transport department said. At the same time, since 2011, the indexation has remained below inflation. Biometrics remains the most profitable way to pay for travel for the fifth year in a row: The cost of the trip will be 71 rubles, which is 12 rubles cheaper than when paying with a bank card. Travel on United tickets for 30, 90 and 365 days will change by an average of 3.5 rubles.
