The UN called for increased funding for humanitarian programs in the world
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the international community to move from investing in conflicts to increasing funding for the organization's humanitarian programs. Tagesschau writes about this on December 30.
"Choose people and the planet, not suffering. <...> It is absolutely clear that the world has the resources to improve life, improve the planet and ensure a future of peace and justice," Guterres said.
In his New Year's address, the UN Secretary General criticized the high military spending of the organization's donor countries and added that more investments should be directed to fighting poverty rather than armed conflicts.
According to the Secretary General of the organization, global military spending has increased to $2.7 trillion, which is 13 times more than spending on humanitarian programs. Gutterisch said that by 2035, these costs will reach $6.6 trillion if current trends continue.
On December 28, US President Donald Trump said that the United States was replacing the UN with efforts to resolve the conflict. In his opinion, the organization does not help in peacemaking.
