The State Duma explained the impossibility of limiting taxi prices in the New Year
An increase in taxi fares during the New Year holidays is not a sufficient reason to set a limit on the cost of trips, since such a mechanism can have extremely negative consequences in conditions of peak demand. This was announced on December 30 by Pavel Fedyaev, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Transport from the United Russia party.
The Deputy Chairman noted that according to the legislation on taxis, the subjects of the Russian Federation are authorized to set minimum prices for taxi services. The maximum fares are determined by market factors such as time of day, day of the week, comfort level and other specific travel conditions.
"The introduction of a price ceiling during a period of high demand can lead to disastrous results. This is a direct detriment to both passengers and the industry. If we administratively fix a low price during the peak period, we will get a simple result: it will become unprofitable for drivers to work. They will prefer to spend time with their family rather than go on the line for the money they can earn on a regular, non—festive day," he said in an interview with TASS.
