Folk signs for December 30: what can and cannot be done
In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Tuesday, December 30, and which church holidays are celebrated on this day.
Folk signs for December 30th
In Russia, Danilov Day was celebrated on December 30. In the old days, on this date, they tried to complete all important household chores before the New Year and Christmas. The women were cleaning the house, starting to prepare supplies for the festive table.
Special attention was paid to fire, a symbol of life and warmth. They tried to heat the stove well in the houses, and sometimes bonfires were lit outside "to help the sun gain strength." Girls often used this evening for fortune-telling, hoping to see their betrothed.
Weather signs on Danilov Day were of great importance, as they were used to judge what the winter and the future harvest would be like. If the frost was thickly covering the trees, then they expected warm and clear weather on Christmas Day. A snowstorm on this day foreshadowed a good honey harvest in the summer. And the heavy snowfall promised a rich harvest of bread.
Other signs of the day:
- The stars in the sky are burning especially brightly — a severe frost will hit the next day.;
- The moon in the sky looks pale and hazy — it's going to snow soon, possibly with rain;
- The wind blows steadily from the southwest - the rest of the winter will be warm and snowy.;
- The sunny day promised a warm May, and the snow was rainy.;
- dreams dreamed on the night of December 30th are considered prophetic. If you dream about something that a person avoids, you will soon have to pay attention to this problem.
What not to do on December 30th
On St. Daniel's Day, there were a number of strict prohibitions and superstitions. Our ancestors believed that breaking these taboos could lead to trouble, illness, or failure. They were especially afraid of quarrels, foul language and any manifestations of malice. It was believed that negative energy could return like a boomerang and overshadow the whole next year. Haste and fuss were also discouraged — the day was intended for calm preparation for the upcoming holidays.
What else can't be done on December 30th:
- to do needlework (sewing, knitting, spinning) — so as not to "sew up" your happiness and not confuse the threads of life;
- Telling outsiders about your illnesses and ailments is believed to worsen the condition.;
- lending and borrowing money will lead to financial problems next year;
- kissing sleeping children, especially under the age of three — the ancestors were afraid that this could bring on them illness and restless sleep.
What is the church holiday on December 30th?
On December 30, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Old Testament prophet Daniel, who lived in the sixth century before the Birth of Christ. He came from a noble Jewish family. In his youth, he and his people were taken captive to Babylon after the capture of Jerusalem by King Nebuchadnezzar. There, thanks to his intelligence and piety, he was chosen to serve at the royal court and was taught Chaldean wisdom.
The saint became famous for the gift of interpreting dreams and visions given to him by God. It was he who revealed and interpreted the famous dreams of King Nebuchadnezzar, and more than once saved the inhabitants of Babylon from death. However, despite the high honors, the prophet did not accept pagan customs and remained faithful to the God of Israel.
In his book, Daniel recorded several prophetic visions relating to the end of the world and the second coming of the Savior. The Church sees in him one of those who particularly clearly pointed to the coming Christ.
On the same day, St. Daniel is remembered (in the schema of Stephen) The Nivert, Egyptian, confessor of the tenth century. Being a noble Spanish nobleman, he neglected worldly fame and took monastic vows. Then he went on a pilgrimage to the holy places — to Constantinople, and then to Jerusalem. After completing his journey in Egypt, he was captured by the Saracens and suffered a martyr's death, refusing to renounce the faith and convert to Islam.
Prayers on December 30th

They also turn to him for protection from unfair accusations and slander. St. Daniel the Confessor is asked for perseverance in faith, renunciation of worldly temptations and strengthening of the spirit in trials.
