Zakharova commented on the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia
On December 29, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed hope that the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, which was signed on December 27, would bring the conflict closer to resolution.
"Achieving long-term peace will depend, first of all, on restoring political trust between the parties and painstaking efforts to further maintain it. We hope that the current agreement will be an important step towards resolving the protracted conflict," Zakharova was quoted as saying on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
In addition, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry added that the Russian side supports the mediation efforts of ASEAN to normalize relations between Thailand and Cambodia.
On December 8, the Cambodian military opened fire on the Thai Anupong base. In response, the Thai army called on residents of the border areas to evacuate to shelters due to the threat of escalation of the conflict. Soon after, fighting between Thailand and Cambodia unfolded along the entire joint border.
On December 26, the Russian Embassy in Cambodia informed Izvestia that, against the background of bilateral negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, official Phnom Penh continues to declare its commitment to a peaceful settlement of the contradictions based on the ceasefire agreement of July 28 and the Kuala Lumpur Declaration of October 26.
Thai PBS TV channel reported on December 27 that Thailand and Cambodia have signed a ceasefire agreement. It is noted that the negotiations were tense, as each side tried to work out an agreement acceptable to itself.
