Russian Ambassador to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Alexander Matsegora was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage. The decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 29, and the document was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.
The diplomat was awarded the award "for his great contribution to the implementation of the foreign policy course of the Russian Federation, courage and dedication shown in the performance of his professional duty."
Matsegora died on December 6 at the age of 71. He has been the Russian ambassador to the DPRK since December 2014, a diplomat and has made a great contribution to the establishment and deepening of the strategic partnership between the two states.
The next day, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a telegram to Russian President Vladimir Putin and expressed his deep condolences to the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang over the death of the Russian ambassador. Putin called Matsegora's death an irreparable loss.
