Happy New Year cards received from unknown numbers should not be opened, as this may trigger malicious code. The corresponding message was published in the Telegram channel of the press service of the Department for the organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

The agency also warned that on the eve of the holiday, advertisements often come about the opportunity to buy a discounted gift, into which fraudsters can embed a virus.

It is noted that due to the holidays in educational institutions, children may receive newsletters offering part-time work in their free time, and warned children not to transfer this card or respond to such messages.

"Over the past holidays, more than 8,000 cybercrimes were recorded, most of which could have been prevented with basic care," the department noted.

Last week, the Interior Ministry warned that fraudsters had stepped up deception of Russians on the eve of the New Year holidays, offering "gifts with fabulous prices," fake promotions and limited-time sweepstakes. Scammers use holiday lures, forcing citizens to make an advance payment for goods that are allegedly sold at special prices.
