FIE admits Russian junior fencers to tournaments with flag and anthem
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has allowed juniors and cadets from Russia and Belarus to participate in competitions under its auspices with national symbols. This was reported by the newspaper Sport-Express on December 29.
According to the updated rules, young athletes will be able to compete in both individual and team disciplines using the national flag, the anthem and the official abbreviation of the country. At the same time, the previously imposed restrictions remain in place for adult fencers and staff representatives.
The federation clarified that cadets and juniors wishing to participate in adult tournaments will be required to undergo a verification procedure to obtain neutral status.
On December 23, the President of the Russian Fencing Federation, Ilgar Mammadov, announced the FIE's admission of Russian juniors to competitions with the flag and anthem of the state. According to him, the women's foil team will be the first to compete in competitions with national symbols on December 31.
