El País pointed to the rupture of the 80-year-old union of the USA and Europe
The United States broke off its 80-year-old alliance with Europe in 2025. The corresponding opinion was shared by the newspaper El País on December 28.
"Looking back on the past year, one piece of news is enough to make it a symbol of our era: in 2025, the United States broke off its long-standing 80—year alliance with Europe," the article says.
According to the author, US President Donald Trump, in his second term, is hostile to the European Union and is trying to get closer to Russia. At the same time, the article notes that so far "the American troops have not packed up and have not closed any of their bases."
Earlier in the day, the newspaper reported that Europe had entered a "new state of alarm" amid increasingly visible signs that the United States not only no longer wants to act as the main guarantor of the continent's security, but is also hostile towards Europeans in a number of areas. At the same time, the publication points out that there is still a broad consensus in the American political and military establishment regarding the strategic importance of maintaining strong security ties with Europe.
