For the first time, the idea of expanding the alliance is being questioned in the new US national security strategy. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pointed this out on December 28.

"With regard to Russia, the absence of open calls for systemic containment of our country in the strategy deserves mention. Perhaps for the first time, if the United States does not commit to not expanding the North Atlantic Alliance, then at least it publicly questions the eternal expansionist trajectory of NATO's evolution," TASS quoted him as saying.
