In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Monday, December 29, and which church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for December 29, 2025

In Russia, Ageyev Day, also known as Agey Inesey, was celebrated on December 29. Its name indicates one of the main customs of the day — careful observation of frost, which was used to judge the future weather and harvest. In general, the holiday was considered a time of summing up and a lull before a series of winter holidays.

Ageev's day was spent with his family, devoting it to household chores. It was extremely important for the peasants to finish all the household chores and carry out a thorough cleaning of the house. The ancestors believed that the remaining "tails" could attract bad luck in the coming year. The holiday was also a time of active preparation for Christmas. The housewives were preparing treats for the carolers, and the men were brewing beer for the festive table.

Special importance was attached to weather signs. They were used primarily to determine what kind of weather would be on Christmas Day. If the trees and houses were abundantly covered with frost, then the weather on the holiday promised to be warm and clear. They also predicted the weather for Christmas. For example, a quickly extinguished fire in the stove foreshadowed a sunny day, and a flame that did not go out for a long time meant an overcast day.

Other signs of the day:

  • frosty patterns have formed on the windows — the cold weather will last at least another 20 days.;
  • if the snow lies close to the fence, you should not expect a rich harvest in summer.;
  • frost on trees leads to frequent precipitation in January;
  • if there is a severe frost in the morning, this weather may persist until Epiphany.

What not to do on December 29th

Our ancestors believed that Ageyev Day has a special energy and requires compliance with a number of prohibitions in order not to bring troubles and failures on the family. For example, on a holiday, they tried not to talk to anyone across the threshold. It was believed that this would lead to a long and serious quarrel. It was also forbidden to leave the house, especially for parents of young children, as this, according to beliefs, could lead to misfortune.

What else can't be done on December 29th:

  • Being lazy and shirking work can lead to a series of failures.;
  • Sitting on the table is a behavior that promises financial difficulties and hardship.;
  • to fix shoes — even simple repairs, according to beliefs, can "invite" trouble.;
  • Leaving unwashed dishes overnight will bring poverty and discord into the house along with dirt.

What is the church holiday on December 29th?

On December 29 (December 16, Old Style), the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy prophet Haggai, the tenth of the 12 minor prophets of the Old Testament. He lived in the sixth century B.C. and was a contemporary of the return of the Jews from Babylonian captivity. Little is known about his life, but his prophetic books have come down to us.

The prophet urged the people and the ruler to resume work on the restoration of the Jerusalem temple, the construction of which was suspended due to the slander of the Samaritans. In his sermons, Haggai proclaimed that the glory of the new temple would be greater than the glory of the former, for in this temple it was necessary for "The Word without Beginning to appear in the last times." His prophecies were fulfilled, and the temple was completed.

Haggai also called for repentance and spiritual purification, denouncing the residents who returned to Jerusalem for building their own homes, while the temple of the Lord remained in desolation.

On the same day, believers remember one of the revered Russian saints, St. Sophia of Suzdal (in the world, Grand Duchess Solomonia Saburova), who was the first wife of Grand Duke Vasily III of Moscow. The marriage turned out to be childless, and after a while Vasily III decided to marry for the second time — Elena Glinskaya, the future mother of Ivan IV the Terrible.

Solomonia was tonsured a nun with the name Sofia and exiled to the Suzdal Pokrovsky Monastery. Having submitted to the will of God, she found solace in fervent prayer and ascetic deeds. Prince Kurbsky in his writings called her a Venerable martyr. Already during the saint's lifetime, and then at her tomb, miraculous healings began to occur.

Prayers on December 29

It is believed that the prophet Haggai instructs on a righteous life and especially notes the love of work in a person. They ask him to get rid of bad habits and keep goodness and faith in his soul. St. Sophia of Suzdal is revered as the patroness of monastics and all those who seek the spiritual path. She is asked for strengthening in faith, humility and chastity, as well as for healing from diseases, including cancer and infertility.

Prayer to the Prophet Haggai

Troparion, glas 2

"O Lord, we celebrate the memory of your Prophet Haggai, and we beseech You: save our souls."

Kontakion, glas 4

"Enlightened by the spirit of your pure heart, the prophecies of your most illustrious friend were: behold, you are real, far away; for this we honor you, blessed prophet Haggai the glorious."

Prayer of Sofia of Suzdal

"Oh, the most laudable and righteous Mother Sophia, the venerable ascetic of the Suzdal country! We glorify your God-pleasing life, we honor your great virtues, we worship your precious relics, we kiss your holy image with love, and with faith we offer you our diligent prayers. Help us, as strangers and strangers in this world, to set out on the true path of Christian life, do not turn your face away from all who seek your protection, spiritually wise those who strive in monasticism to know who is alien to the image of salvation of their souls, guide us to the feat of humility, patience and repentance, hasten to acquire chastity, obedience and the love of God. Be the shield and protection of this monastery from all evil, and you yourself zealously strive in it. Turn and admonish the lost people to the right path. Beseech the Lord of Hosts to spare our souls and grant us time for repentance, so that through your intercession we may be worthy to pass away from our sorrowful earthly life without perdition and to be partakers of eternal bliss in the heavenly abodes of our God and Savior, to Whom befits all glory, honor and worship, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
